Scio began as New Market in 1837. It was platted in 1852 and was renamed Scio, after Scio College, in 1876. Scio was the scene of a great oil boom in 1898 with nearly 1000 wells in the area, and 250 within the village. Scio is located 3 miles south of New Rumley, Birthplace of General George Armstrong Custer. An Ohio Historical Marker and Park are on the birthplace site along with a large statue of Custer.

Scio Sales. Weekly livestock auction and flee market every Friday on Ohio 151 west of the village.
Main Street. Historic buildings with iron facades dating back to 1894. The Scio library is located in one of these restored buildings.
